Ahhhhh, Hawaii. Where the weather is warm, the sun shines and under no circumstances are you suppose to have blizzard warnings. Okay, so you are wondering what this has to do with prep sports…well, absolutely nothing, but you still want to look at some pretty photos right?
Still looking? Okay good, because I shot some Husky football too if the surfing stuff is too “ordinary” for you.
During the winter, wind driven waves slam into the North Shore of Oahu, kicking up monster surf and turning the north side of the island into a surfer’s paradise. People come from around the world to ride at the North Shore and to have shave ice at Matsumoto’s. Winter waves can reach heights of 20 feet with 50-foot faces! The surf wasn’t that big while I was visiting, but one morning, the waves at Waimea Bay were breaking with about 18 foot faces and continued to get bigger as the afternoon swell came in. By the end of the day, the waves had 25-foot faces and the lifeguards had to make 25 saves, ten at Waimea Bay alone.
Unfortunately, by the time the really big waves were rolling in, I was already getting rained on at Aloha Stadium as the Washington Huskies took the field against Hawaii. The Huskies took it to the undefeated Warriors in the first quarter, forcing three turnovers including a fumble by quarterback Colt Brennan.
By the second half, even Santa was wondering what happened to the first half Huskies and decided to come onto the field and ask one of the officials about it.
In the end, Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan was a hero and a Heisman Trophy candidate and the Huskies were left with a 4-9 record.
