While nothing is official yet, all signs point to linebacker Aaron Curry having been traded. Curry, the No. 4 pick in the 2009 draft, was not at practice Wednesday and his locker had been cleaned out.
Following Wednesday’s practice, the last before players get four days off for the bye, linebackers KJ Wright and Leroy Hill both said Curry had come and said his goodbyes earlier in the day.
“He came and said how much he had learned from us and how much he’s going to miss us and everything and everything,” Hill said. “But it’s a new beginning for him and hopefully he steps to the plate. Now he won’t have all the expectations that he had here and just relax and play ball. I wish him luck and I think everything will work out for him.”
Wright, who replaced Curry as a starter earlier this season, credited Curry with teaching him a lot, saying Curry took him under his wing this summer, and like Hill, Wright said a fresh start might be good for the former first-round pick.
“He gets to go to a new team, show the team who he is, and show what kind of person he is,” Wright said. “I think it’s going to work out good for him. . . He came and talked to the linebackers and told us thank you for everything we’ve done for him. Told Coach Norton thank you.”
When the Seahawks picked Curry in 2009, he was considered the safest pick in the draft, and one of the best linebacker prospects in years, but despite being a starter in his first two year, he never lived up to expectations. Prior to this season, Curry restructured his contract to make him a free agent after the 2012 season instead of 2014, while also giving up his guaranteed salary for next year. That was a sign that his future in Seattle beyond this year was in question. Curry eventually lost his starting job to Wright, however, making him expendable this year.
UPDATE
Still not word from team, but FoxSports.com’s Jay Glazer is reporting that Curry is heading to Oakland for an undisclosed pick in 2012 and another one in 2013.
