Ackerman, Pohl swim top qualifying times

ANACORTES — Kina Ackerman of Meadowdale and Martha Pohl of Everett were the top local performers Friday on the first day of competition at the Northwest 3A District girls swim meet at Fidalgo Pool and Fitness Center.

Ackerman, a sophomore, was the top quailifier in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2 minutes, 18.32 seconds. She also qualified second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:27.62. In the latter race, Ackerman finished less than five seconds behind the top qualifier, Jessica Vlasic of Squalicum (5:22.75).

Pohl, a senior, lived up to her billing as the top seed in the 100 breaststroke, swimming the fastest qualifying time of the day (1:08.82). She finished almost five seconds ahead of the runner-up, Erin Parkinson of Ferndale.

Pohl also finished second to Ackerman in the 200 IM with a time of 2:21.63.

The only other Wesco swimmer to turn in a top individual qualifying time was Laura Millet of Shorecrest in the 100 backstroke (1:04.59).

The top six qualifiers in each event advanced to today’s finals. The next six advanced to the consolation finals.

4A District diving: At Marysville, sophomore Sarah Clark of Marysville-Pilchuck High School was in first place after the opening day of diving competition at the Northwest 4A District girls meet at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

After eight dives, Clark had accumulated 271.5 points. Fiona Weeks of Kamiak was second with 253.25, and Erika McClung of Kamiak was third with 231.85.

The final three dives are scheduled for today.

Volleyball

Darrington 3, Evergreen Lutheran 0: At Edmonds, Darrington’s Mandy Powell had 25 assists to help lead the Loggers to a 25-15, 25-14, 25-18 victory over Evergreen Lutheran in the Class 2B Tri-District tournament at Edmonds-Woodway High School.

“We had excellent ball control all match … Mandy (used misdirection) to set up our hitters,” Darrington coach Greg Powell said.

Jordan Corley went 12-for-12 on her serves and had eight kills for the victorious Loggers. Darrington’s Hailey Wales finished with eight blocks and three kills.

Darrington (12-3) plays Life Christian in a quarterfinal match at 9 a.m. today at Edmonds-Woodway High School.
