Afternoon Update

Washington head coach Tyrone Willingham said that Isaiah Stanback is doing well after his surgery and is resting at home and could be up and moving next week. He said it’s not likely Stanback would travel to Cal this weekend because of the pressure that air travel causes, but that he could travel to Oregon or Washington State.

The only real injury news was that C.J. Wallace bruised his knee in practice Tuesday, but he didn’t seem like it was bothering him when I saw him this afternoon. Willingham sounded a little more concerned about Dashon Goldson’s ankle, saying he’d see how much work Goldson could get this week before deciding if he could play Saturday.

He said that it’s not a foregone conclusion that Jordan Murchison would redshirt this year. Murchison hasn’t played this season because of knee pain but Willingham said he has been practicing more the last two weeks.

Nothing new to report on the quarterback situation. Willingham said all three players got work on Tuesday and all did some good things.

Defensive coordinator Kent Baer stopped by for a few minutes and said that Cal is the best offensive team he’s seen this year, saying that he sees no weaknesses. Of course, Baer has said that about almost every team this season, but he’s definitely got a point with Cal, which reminds me of USC last season as far as talented skill players go. He sounded really impressed with running back Marshawn Lynch, who he said is one of the best backs in the nation.

He said he hasn’t decided yet who will start at defensive end between Greyson Gunheim and Brandon Ala. He said that Cal is a physical team and that Ala is sometimes a more physical player than Gunheim. Both will surely play though, and both are on at the same time in nickel situations.
