AL notes: Season over for Angels’ Izturis

ANGELS: Los Angeles Angels shortstop Maicer Izturis will miss the rest of the season after tearing a ligament in his left thumb. Izturis aggravated the injury Wednesday and is scheduled to be operated on next Tuesday by Dr. Steve Shin, who will repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament. The Angels expect the 27-year-old Izturis to be ready for spring training.

RAYS: Tampa Bay closer Troy Percival was put on the disabled list Friday with a cartilage injury to his right knee, his third stint on the DL this season.

Percival, who has 27 saves for the AL East-leading Rays, sprained his knee in the ninth inning Thursday. The 39-year-old closer fielded a bunt by Oakland’s Mark Ellis then chased down the batter to record the out before limping back to the mound.

YANKEES: Slumping center fielder Melky Cabrera was demoted to the minors Friday, the biggest move in a mini shakeup by the struggling New York Yankees as they regroup for a playoff push. The Yankees also designated backup first baseman Richie Sexson for assignment and placed pitcher Dan Giese on the disabled list. The club brought up three players from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre: outfielder Brett Gardner, infielder Cody Ransom and reliever Chris Britton.

… Yankees designated hitter/left fielder Hideki Matsui hit a solo homer in his first minor league rehab game with Class-A Tampa on Friday. Matsui, on the 15-day disabled list since June 27 with an injured left knee, went 1-for-3 as the DH.
