AL NOTES: Yankees hope to finalize decision on Posada

YANKEES: Jorge Posada met Thursday with New York Mets physician David Altchek, and the New York Yankees hoped to finalize their decision regarding Posada’s ailing right shoulder.

Posada expressed serious concern about his shoulder earlier this week, but Yankee manager Joe Girardi Thursday reiterated his optimism that Posada will not need corrective surgery. “Dr. Andrews said it’s much the same as before,” Girardi said. “That’s what I’m basing this on.”

Posada met with Andrews earlier this week and also sent his MRI results to Reds physician Tim Kremchek. Posada is getting four opinions before moving forward. If they opt to go the conservative route, Girardi said Posada will be shut down from throwing for at least two weeks.

Pitcher Phil Hughes has a stress fracture in one of his ribs, and the Yankees’ pitcher is expected to be sidelined until at least July. Hughes, placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, had an MRI exam that revealed the stress fracture in the ninth rib on his right side. He will be shut down for four weeks and then re-evaluated. General manager Brian Cashman said the team probably can’t expect the 21-year-old right-hander to return before July. Hughes is 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA in six starts this year.

Yankees minor pitcher Angel Reyes was suspended for 50 games after testing positive for stanozolol metabolites under baseball’s minor league drug program. The suspension will start at the beginning of Class A Staten Island’s season in the New York-Penn League.

ANGELS: Los Angeles called up Nick Adenhart from Class AAA Salt Lake, and the right-hander started Thursday night’s game against Oakland. The Angels also placed infielder Maicer Izturis on the 15-day disabled list with a strained lower back, and transferred right-hander Kelvim Escobar (shoulder) to the 60-day DL.

TIGERS: Detroit reinstated reliever Francisco Cruceta from the restricted list. The right-hander was brought up from Class AAA Toledo, where he was 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA and 15 strikeouts in seven innings spanning three games. Cruceta, from the Dominican Republic, had trouble getting his work visa this spring. He was assigned to Toledo on April 22. He takes the roster spot of right-hander Jason Grilli, traded by Detroit to the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday for minor league pitcher Zachary Simons.

RED SOX: Boston has spoken with officials in Sarasota, Fla., about relocating their spring training home from Fort Myers to the facility that will become vacant when the Cincinnati Reds move to Arizona in two years. Red Sox spokesman John Blake called the talks preliminary.
