Not a lot of kids can juggle high school athletics, academics and running a production company, but that’s exactly what Shorecrest senior Alex Ramsey does. He plays center defensive back for the Scots soccer team, has a 3.96 grade point average and started his own media company, sunderside.com. Shorecrest head coach Drew Thompson said Ramsey is a great leader on the field and “always has a smile on his face. He’s a great kid. Great academically. Great soccer player.” Q: What’s been the highlight of your soccer season so far?
A: Actually, last game I scored a goal against Oak Harbor. That was pretty fun. I don’t get to score often because I play center back.
Q: How many goals do you have in your high school career?
A: Eight. I’ve been on varsity for three years and JV when I was a freshman and I don’t get to score a lot. But I get up and get my chances.
Q: So those goals are always special then?
A: Yeah goals are always special. I always like to score but my job is to defend. And that’s fun for me.
Q: How long have you been playing soccer for?
A: I’ve been playing soccer for 13 years now. For a while. Since I was five.
Q: What do you like about the sport?
A: I like when a team can possess, and keep the ball away from the other team for a long time and play some good-looking soccer. That’s really fun to be a part of.
Q: Are you excited to graduate?
A: Yeah, definitely. I’m so excited. Next year I’m going to USC (University of Southern California) film school.
Q: Wow, what’s that going to be like?
A: I don’t know. It’s going to be a lot of fun. Making movies, hanging out with friends. It’s going to be a good time. SoCal is a good place to be. I’m definitely excited about that.
Q: What got you into video productions?
A: About seven years ago I started making videos longboarding with my friends. That was kind of the spark of it. We didn’t really care much about video back then but it kind of developed into something a lot bigger and I started making actual short films and advertisements. I actually started a media company last year, that I’ve been doing for a while now and it’s been pretty fun.
Q: What’s the best video you’ve ever made?
A: Last year I made a video called “Tantalus” for my USC submission and it’s definitely the best thing I’ve ever made. It’s on vimeo.
Q: Where can people find some of your videos?
A: You can go to sunderside.com. That’s my company’s website.
Q: What’s your favorite movie?
A: “Inception” is definitely my favorite movie. I always answer “Inception.” It’s such a great plot and everything about it is perfect. Christopher Nolan’s my favorite director. I’ve always admired his work.
Q: What about your least favorite movie?
A: I don’t know. I don’t think about my least favorite movies. I’m going to say “Human Centipede 2.” No one should ever watch that. Ever. (Laughs.)
Q: What is the key to making a great movie?
A: The key is the details. Definitely. A lot of people skip over certain things when they’re first starting out. It comes down to the color correction, the sound editing, all the small stuff. It throws people off. But, also, a good story is really important.
Q: So if I wrote a script with lots of details could you make it into a movie for me?
A: I probably could if it was a good script. I’d want to make it.
Q: No promises. It probably wouldn’t be. Aside from film and soccer, what else do you do in your free time?
A: Hang out with friends. I take a lot of pictures, which is fun for me. I applied to a few photography scholarships. I like to work on my business and market that.
Q: What’s the ideal, Hollywood ending for your senior soccer season?
A: Hopefully we get to state and make it to the final. That’d be really nice. We have a good team this year. We haven’t lost yet. I think we have a chance.
