Get ready for our salute to the most outstanding local gridiron players. Tomorrow we will unveil our 2008 All-Area Football Teams.

As usual, we picked a First Team and a Second Team. Our choices are based on feedback from coaches and first-hand observations.

The top All-Area honors go to two competitors, our Offensive Player of the Year and our Defensive Player of the Year. I don’t want to spoil anything, but here are some hints: The Offensive POY is a record-setting quarterback who racked more than 500 yards of offense in one game this season. And our Defensive POY is a hard-hitting linebacker who was mentored by a former University of Washington star.

Any guesses?

A few other quick thoughts…

*The 2008 football season ends tonight. Earlier today I watched part of Bellevue’s 35-6 blowout victory over Union Class 3A championship. Congrats to the 14-0 Wolverines, who overcame a frightening bus crash last weekend and won their final two games by big margins.

I also noticed that Lynden upset top-ranked Prosser in the 2A title game. I don’t know if that will make the Archbishop Murphy Wildcats, who lost against Lynden in the semifinals, feel any better. But the fact is that Archbishop Murphy, despite committing an unusually high number of mistakes in the semis, had a chance to tie Lynden in the final minute. Who knows what would have happened if Murphy, not Lynden, had played Prosser in the championship.

*What a great start for the first-year Glacier Peak basketball teams. The Grizzlies boys squad improved to 2-0 last night with a decisive victory against Oak Harbor. Glacier Peak’s girls team won its program debut Wednesday.

*Who needs 3-pointers? The Jackson boys basketball team scored 97 points Thursday in its season opener. The T-wolves made just one 3-pointer but they feasted at the foul line, going 30 for 37 (81 percent). Guards Ryan Todd and Brett Kingma were a combined 20 for 21 (95.2 percent).
