All three Wesco teams eliminated in pool play at 4A tourney

SPOKANE – It happened again.

All three Western Conference teams were eliminated during pool play Friday in the 4A state tournament at the Spokane Arena.

District champion Stanwood, which was 1-2, was the only Wesco team to win a match. Marysville-Pilchuck and Snohomish both were 0-3.

Stanwood won its first match, beating Inglemoor 15-10, 15-10 before losing to Emerald Ridge 15-5, 15-5 and Lewis and Clark 17-15, 15-9.

Marysville-Pilchuck lost to Kentridge 15-5, 15-10, to Auburn-Riverside 15-11, 15-5 and to Mead 15-4, 15-6.

Snohomish lost to Kentlake 15-2, 15-10, to Bethel 15-5, 15-3 and to Eisenhower 15-6, 15-5.

Class 3A: At Lacey, Lynnwood came within a game of advancing to the quarterfinals, but lost 15-8, 12-15, 15-12 to West Valley of Yakima in a winner-advance, loser-out match. The Royals (1-2) finished third in their pool behind Seattle Prep and West Valley. Lynnwood lost 15-7, 16-14 to Seattle Prep, the top seeded team in its pool, but came back to defeat Holy Names 15-7, 15-2 to set up the critical match against West Valley.

Class 2A: At Yakima, Granite Falls assured itself of a place in the quarterfinals by defeating Ridgefield 11-15, 15-1, 17-15 and Ephrata 15-7, 8-15, 15-13. The Tigers (2-1) wound up second in their pool after losing a third match 15-3, 15-7 to pool champion Lakeside.

Granite Falls is making its second straight state tournament appearance. Last year the Tigers were eliminated in pool play.

In the three matches, Becky Kirchgessner had 26 kills, Denise Wilbur had 40 kills, Ashley Quinn had 59 assists and Tasha Perry served 33-for-33.

Class A: At Yakima, Coupeville and King’s were eliminated in pool play. Coupeville’s only win was against King’s, 15-4, 15-12. King’s and Coupeville both lost two matches to Colfax and Ilwaco before facing each other. King’s lost 15-3, 15-3 to Colfax and 15-6, 15-10 to Ilwaco. Coupeville lost 1-15, 15-8, 15-10 to Ilwaco and 15-6, 15-6 to Colfax.

Class B: At Cheney, the Darrington Loggers advanced to today’s quarterfinals by going 2-1 in pool play. Darrington defeated Wahkiakum 15-12, 15-7 in its third pool-play match to secure its quarterfinal berth. Darrington beat Lyle 8-15, 15-11, 16-14, but lost 15-7, 15-12 to eventual pool champion Ritzville to set up its fateful match with Wahkiakum.
