Another 50-points for Glacier Peak in win

SNOHOMISH — Fifty is the magic number for the Glacier Peak football team.

The Grizzlies have reached that many points in each of their six victories this season, Thursday night was no exception as GP rolled Everett 51-19 at Snohomish Veterans Memorial Stadium.

“It feels really good to win on senior night,” Glacier Peak quarterback David Linney said.

It was quite a senior night for Linney, who threw a pair of touchdowns, rushed for one, kicked a pair of extra points and nailed a 44-yard field goal. Linney completed 11 of 16 pass attempts for 161 yards with one interception.

Before Linney left the game toward the end of the third quarter, the Grizzlies (6-2 Wesco 3A) had a balanced attack, rushing for 160 yards. GP benefited from a lot of short fields thanks to a pair of Everett turnovers and a few short kickoffs. For the most part the Grizzlies stuck to the basics on offense because they didn’t want to show too much to their next opponent in the playoffs.

“We don’t want Bellevue to see what we have in store for them next week,” Linney said.

For Glacier Peak the victory means the Grizzlies clinched the No. 3 seed to the playoffs from Wesco 3A and a date with the perennial powerful Wolverines. Everett’s season ends with a nonleague game next week.

Shorecrest (5-3) also defeated winless Marysville Getchell Thursday night to secure the fourth berth into the district playoffs from Wesco 3A. A Seagull victory would have put the three teams in a tie for two playoff spots, forcing a Kansas tiebreaker.

“Our kids battled,” Everett coach Will Soren said. “They gave it everything they had and I’m proud of that effort.”

From the opening series it was clear that Everett was overmatched on the line of scrimmage. The Seagull line had the size, but Glacier Peak’s defensive front seven lived in the Everett offensive backfield all night with its superior speed and quickness.

Marcus Heard — the only four-year varsity player on the Grizzlies roster and lone remaining member of the inaugural GP team — as well as fellow senior Collin Park harassed Evertt quarterback Riley Ayers all night, repeatedly coming untouched into the pocket before the Everett quarterback could take a step. Heard and Park combined for three sacks in Everett’s first six plays from scrimmage.

“We brought a lot of pressure at them,” GP coach Rory Rosenbach said.

Linney lead the offense to a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter, running in a 6-yard score and then handing it to Riley Argue — a senior offensive lineman — for the second score.

Everett’s offense looked like it had no pulse until Blake Williams exploded. The senior running back burst through for a 75-yard scamper that ended on the 2-yard line late in the first quarter, setting up an Ayers 3-yard run, but that was all the offense the Seagulls could manage in the first half.

Another big run by Williams, this one in the second quarter for 32 yards, put the Seagulls deep in GP territory, but the clock ran out on the Everett attack at the 7-yard line, effectively ending Everett’s chance to get back in the game.

Williams rushed 20 times for 183 yards to go over 1,000 yards for the season. He also caught four passes for 112 yards and a pair of scores.

“Great football player,” Rosenbach said of the Everett runner. “Great football player. He’s a fast, fast kid and he did a great job.”
