Apple Cup game thread

Another miss

Ryan Perkins just missed a 28-yard field goal attempt, keeping it a three-point game with 3:24 left.

That’ll be all for this blog until after the game.

Huskies not helping themselves right now

The Huskies could be on their way to a pretty comfortable lead, but miscues have cost them big here in the fourth quarter. Jared Ballman missed a 40-yard field goal that would have made it 13-7, then after the defense forced a quick three-and-out, Devin Aguilar returned a punt 54 yards to inside the WSU 10-yard line, but a Chancellor Young was flagged for a block in the back, meaning the Huskies will instead start on their own 23.

UW 10, WSU 7, 2:56 left in third quarter

Hey, something exciting happened.

After punting five times on their first six possessions (the most punts by a UW opponent this year, by the way) the Cougars made a game out of this thanks to a 57-yard touchdown run by Logwone Mitz.

This game certainly hasn’t had a lot of big moments so far, but if it stays close we should at least get an interesting finish.

UW 10, WSU 0, halftime

For the first time this season, a quarter has come to an end with Washington winning. No, really, I’m serious, that hasn’t happened yet this year. The 10-point lead is also the biggest the Huskies have had all season.

The Cougars have punted four times already, and turned it over on their other possession. WSU’s last drive gave us a great “only in the 2008 Apple Cup” moment, as Cougar punter Reid Forrest rushed 28 yards on a fake punt. I don’t know what’s crazier, that the Cougars decided to fake a punt on fourth and 18, or that Forrest got it with 10 yards to spare.

Willie Griffin had a big first half for the Huskies, rushing for 86 yards on 18 carries, while Ronnie Fouch was six for eight for 42 yards. Three of those passes went to D’Andre Goodwin, who has 27 yards.

The Huskies have 138 total yards to 95 for Washington State.

So far, this game is about as unexciting you would expect a game between two terrible teams to be.

Huskies extend lead to 10-0

Washington got three points out of that WSU turnover, as Ryan Perkins kicked a 35-yarder to make it 10-0.

Cougars even up the turnover battle

Kevin Lopina just threw a pick to match Ronnie Fouch at one for the game. Mesphin Forrester came up the pick, his second in as many games, and returned it to the WSU. The play was reviewed, and replays showed Forrester’s knee hit the ground on the catch, but for some reason his return was allowed to stand. Seems the officials are trying to match the ineptitude of the two teams on the field today.

So far WSU’s possessions have gone: punt, punt, punt, interception. That’s just a little different from most games for Washington’s defense.

Not sure if they’re showing it on TV, but Tyrone Willingham is a lot more fired up today than usual.

Oh, and it’s still 7-0 Huskies.

Huskies 7, Cougars 0, 12:17 left in second quarter

Well, somebody had to score eventually, and the Huskies are the first to do so. Willie Griffin carried seven times for 43 yards on the drive, including the 3-yard touchdown run.

No score after one quarter

So far, this game is living down to its expectations. Neither team has even come close to scoring yet, and the biggest play of the game, a long kickoff return to start the game by Quinton Richardson, was called back because of a personal foul penalty.

Good times.

As the second quarter starts, Washington has the ball just inside of WSU territory.

UW 1, WSU 0

No, that’s not the score, that’s the turnover count, which may be higher than the point total today. It was only fitting that the Huskies turned the ball over on their first possession when Ronnie Fouch threw a pick.

WSU couldn’t capitalize on that turnover, however, and just punted the ball back to Washington.

A couple of new starters on offense today for Washington, as Willie Griffin started at tailback and Skyler Fancher is in at right tackle because of Ben Ossai’s concussion.
