EUGENE — The Emeralds came close, and then they got a lot closer.
The missed opportunites ended with Eugene’s five-run sixth inning as the Emeralds beat Everett 8-0 Friday night in a game filled with AquaSox miscues.
Tommy Burns replaced Everett starter Steven Ewing in the bottom of the sixth after Fernando Perez doubled to advance Hunter Renfroe to third. Michael Miller singled Renfroe home to end the drought for both teams, Fernando Perez moved to third, Wynton Bernard walked and then a sacrifice fly by Michael Bass brought home Perez for the 2-0 lead.
A wild pitch by Burns advanced runners to second and third before Anthony Torres hit a two-run double. Another wild pitch, combined with an errant throw by Everett catcher Carlton Tanabe, allowed Torres to score the fifth run of the inning.
Richardson hit a three-run home run to left-center field in the eighth to finish off the Frogs.
Erik Shoenrock (2-1) kept Everett in check with seven strikeouts and allowed a hit and a walk in six innings. Jairo Gomez and Brandon Fry closed the game, each giving up a hit to Everett (19-9).
Eugene (10-18) nearly scored earlier, but couldn’t capitalize on a bumpy start from Ewing (0-1), who gave up four hits, four runs (two earned) and had six strikeouts.
Ewing threw three wild pitches — one each in the first, second and fourth innings. In the second, Miller doubled to right field before Ewing’s wild pitch advanced the Emeralds’ catcher to third. Ewing forced Bass into a double play for the final two outs of the inning.
Ewing performed his escape act again in the fourth.
He gave up a single to Santos, walked Miller, threw a wild pitch to Bernard that advanced runners to second and third and Bernard’s infield popup ended the inning.
Everett threatened in the top of the sixth when Shoenrock’s wild pitch advanced Bryan Brito to third, but the AquaSox came up empty as Eugene forced two consecutive outs to end the inning.
