BOISE, Idaho — Playing with a lead or playing from behind, the Boise Hawks are proving they can beat the Everett AquaSox in any type of baseball game.
A day after Boise jumped out to an 8-0 lead over Everett and never trailed, the Hawks scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a two-run AquaSox lead and take a 5-4 Northwest League victory at Memorial Stadium in Boise.
Boise’s No. 9 batter, Dwayne Kemp, hit a two-run home run in the seventh, David Macias hit a double to score the go-ahead run and Kyler Burke chipped in two RBI to lead the Hawks, who won their third straight.
Everett’s record fell to 15-20, having lost the first three games of this five-game series. Despite a Salem-Keizer loss Tuesday, the AquaSox remained two games away from first place in the Northwest League’s West Division.
Boise, which has won nine out of its past 10 games, improved to 22-13.
Everett enjoyed a 4-2 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh, but couldn’t hold on.
Boise’s Andrew Rundle doubled to lead off the inning and, one batter later, Kemp hit his two-run home run to tie it 4-4. Josh Harrison reached base on a throwing error and scored the winning run for Boise, who sent nine batters to the plate.
The home run was just the second hit of the season for Kemp, who entered Tuesday’s game batting .067 in the Northwest League.
The loss overshadowed solid hitting performances by Everett’s Fleming Baez and Luis Nunez, who each batted 2-for-4 with an RBI. Nate Tenbrink added a solo home run for the AquaSox in the seventh inning. Welington Dotel was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts to follow up a two home run effort the day before.
It shaped up to be mini-pitching duel early on. Everett starter Steven Hensley striking out five batters and limiting the Hawks to two runs in five innings. Boise starter James Leverton surrendered only one run while coaxing eight Everett batters into ground outs in four innings. Everett limited the Hawks to seven hits, but all seven were for extra bases — five doubles, a triple and a home run.
Game four of the series is tonight at 6:15 p.m., with Everett right-hander Kenn Kasparek set to face off against Boise right-hander Casey Coleman.
