VANCOUVER, B.C. — It seems the Everett AquaSox are mortal.
Everett dropped its first series of the season after falling 7-3 to the Vancouver Canadians on Wednesday night in Northwest League play.
The Sox won each of their first five series of the season en route to winning 14 of their first 17 games. However, Wednesday’s loss gave Vancouver two wins in the three-game series. The Canadians also pulled within three games of Everett in the North Division standings.
Vancouver (12-8) pounded out seven of its 13 hits in the first two innings en route to building a 6-0 lead, and the Canadians cruised home from there. Jordan Leyland led the way for Vancouver by going 2-for-3 with two runs and two walks.
Colton Turner earned the win on the mound for the Canadians with 6 2/3 solid innings of work.
Jamodrick McGruder paced the Sox (15-5), going 2-for-3 with a triple. Starter Tyler Olson took the loss, allowing seven runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Vancouver took control right out of the gate, jumping to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Leyland singled home the first run. Justin Atkinson’s fly twisted right fielder Reggie Lawson around and fell for an RBI double. Then Brenden Kalfus’ groundout to second brought home another run as the Sox found themselves in an early hole.
The Canadians then got three more in the second. Dickie Thon lined an RBI single to right, then L.B. Dantzler followed with a two-run double off the right-field wall, giving Vancouver a 6-0 lead.
Everett got on the board in the third. McGruder tripled to the center-field wall to drive home the first run, then he scored on Jack Reinheimer’s bunt single as the Sox cut the deficit to 6-2. However, the Sox got no closer the rest of the way.
