AquaSox melt down late, fall to Hillsboro 9-7 on the road

HILLSBORO, Ore. — The Everett AquaSox coughed up a pair of big leads as the Hillsboro Hops came from behind to knock off Everett 9-7 Friday night before 4,554 fans at Ron Tonkin Field.

It was the second consecutive win for the Hops (14-14) in the third game of the five-game series against Everett (14-14).

The AquaSox led 4-0 and later took a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the eighth. But the Hops scored five times in the eighth as Alexis Olmeda and Manny Jefferson had RBI singles and Mark Karaviotis walked with the bases loaded and later stole home as part of a double steal.

The loss spoiled an impressive start by Everett starter Brandon Miller, who did not allow a hit while striking out five in four innings of work. He walked one and hit a batter in his best outing of the season.

Everett built a 4-0 lead with a first-inning RBI single from Kyle Lewis, and a two-run homer by Eric Filia and an RBI double by Yojhan Quevedo in the fifth.

The trouble started when Jeffeson Medina relieved Miller in the bottom of the fifth. Medina walked leadoff hitter Luke Lowery on four pitches and allowed RBI singles to Jefferson and Marcus Wilson and a sacrifice fly by Connor Owings as the Hops cut Everett’s lead to 4-3.

Everett answered in the sixth when Bryson Brigman led off with a triple and scored on Donnie Walton’s RBI single to make it 5-3. Everett added two more in the seventh when Johmbeyker Morales walked and scored on a wild pitch, and Nick Zammarelli singled and scored on an error to stretch the lead to 7-3.

Hillsboro scored once in the bottom of the seventh when Karaviotis reached on a two-out error and scored on Jefferson’s double to make it 7-4 and set up the five-run eighth.

Walton had three hits as he extended his hitting streak to six games. Lewis also had three hits, while Zammarelli and Quevedo each had two. Everett had 13 hits on the night.

The series continues at 5 p.m. Saturday. Ljay Newsome (3-1, 4.13 ERA) will start for Everett against at yet-to-be-determined Hops hurler.
