Getting up to speed

Everett outfielder Jabari Blash may be back to feeling 100-percent healthy, but the Sox are nevertheless easing him back into action.

Blash was sidelined three weeks ago when he suffered a strained gluteus maximus muscle. At the time he was considered day-to-day. However, he ended up sitting out a week, played three games in four days, then sat another five days before getting back into the lineup again Sunday in Boise. He sat again Monday, but was back in the lineup both Wednesday and Thursday.

The powerful and athletic Blash is an important component of Everett’s offense. The eighth-round pick from the 2010 draft has generally been in the cleanup spot when in the lineup, and through Wednesday he was batting .298 with two homers in 13 games.

But don’t expect to see Blash in the lineup every night as the Sox are taking every precaution.

“He’s back to 100 percent, but we want to protect him and make sure he finishes the season at least getting consistent playing time,” Everett manager Scott Steinmann said. “So we’re going to put a plan in place, try to get him a couple days on, a day off, a couple days on again. We’re going to keep him moving forward and hopefully in another month he’s playing all the time. But we want to get to that point first.”

Also on the injury front, relievers Cameron Hobson and Max Krakowiak are currently unavailable. Hobson is on track to return next week from elbow tendonitis. However, Krakowiak has been pitching through a knee injury, and in compensating he strained his shoulder. Krakowiak was scheduled to be seen by a specialist today, with the knee injury being the primary concern.

Hard justice

Spokane is a tad short-handed for the five-game series against the Sox. The Indians had four players suspended by the Northwest League in the fallout from Monday’s bench-clearing brawl with the Vancouver Canadians at Spokane’s Avista Stadium.

Spokane closer Matt West received the biggest punishment, getting a six-game suspension. That means West will not appear in the series in Everett.

Also suspended for the Indians were second baseman Rougned Odor (four games) and pitchers Jose Monegro (three games) and Santo Perez (three games). The suspensions to West, Odor and Monegro went into effect Wednesday, while the start date of Perez’s suspension was still being determined as the pitcher suspensions are being staggered.

Vancouver had two players suspended as shortstop Shane Opitz and second baseman Jonathon Berti each got three games. A total of 51 players received fines of undisclosed amounts.
