Gallagher gone
The Everett AquaSox were already struggling, and now their leading pitcher has left the building.
Nolan Gallagher, the Northwest League’s leader in ERA, departed the team Sunday. The right-hander, who had a miniscule ERA of 0.84 as Everett’s No. 5 starter, was promoted to Wisconsin of the full-season single-A Midwest League.
“It’s part of development,” Everett manager Mike Tosar said of losing Gallagher. “If you do well you’re going to move up, that’s what it’s about.”
Also gone is left-hander Brent Gaphardt. Gaphardt who never appeared in a game for Everett, was sent to the Mariners’ complex in Peoria, Ariz., to rehabilitate an arm injury.
Gallagher, the Seattle Mariners’ fourth-round pick in this year’s draft out of Stanford, was virtually perfect in his month with Everett. In six starts the Red Lodge, Mont., native pitched 32 innings and gave up just three earned runs, finishing his Sox stint with 12 straight scoreless frames. He gave up just 19 hits and six walks and struck out 24.
Gallagher’s departure represents the first change in the starting rotation this season. He’s also the first significant contributor promoted out of Everett this year.
“He was outstanding,” Tosar said of Gallagher’s time in Everett. “He threw the ball very well, he commanded three pitches for strikes, he was getting ahead of hitters, and when you do that you get the results he was getting.
“Other guys should learn from his outings and see that once you get his results you’re going to be out of here.”
With Gallagher gone, recent addition Alfredo Venegas will step into the starting rotation. The right-hander from Equador gave up three runs in three inning in his only appearance for Everett so far this season.
Nightcap recap: The late game from Saturday’s doubleheader wasn’t any kinder to the Everett AquaSox than the opener.
Everett was unable to get anything going offensively in the nightcap, falling 4-1 to the Hawks in the seven-inning game. The victory gave Boise, which won the opener 6-3, a sweep of the doubleheader.
Al Albuquerque threw five scoreless innings for Boise, and the Sox never put a dent in the scoreboard until the bottom of the seventh, when Jeff Dunbar led off by crushing a solo home run to left.
Jose Made broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth with a solo home run. The Hawks then scored three more in the sixth on Kyler Burke’s RBI double and Luis Bautista’s two-run single.
The loss spoiled a dominating start by Everett’s Juan Ramirez. Ramirez lit up the radar gun, reaching as high as 97 mph. In five innings he gave up four hits and two walks and struck out seven, but was the hard-luck loser.
Short hops: The AquaSox are glad to put Boise behind them for the remainder of the season. Everett finished the season series 2-8 against the Hawks. … Although Saturday’s doubleheader was a setback for Everett, it was a good day for Sox infielder Roberto Mena. With three hits in the two games Mena quadrupled his season hit total (he was 1-for-31 going into the game) and raised his batting average from .032 to .108. … Sunday was Seattle Seahawks day at Everett Memorial Stadium. However, Seahawks Ryan Plackemeier did not kick out the first punt as initially scheduled, instead throwing out one of the first pitches. Cornerback Josh Wilson, the Seahawks’ second-round pick in this year’s draft, was also in attendance and also threw out a first pitch.
