BOISE — Tuesday night the Boise Hawks batters bludgeoned Everett AquaSox pitching.
Wednesday night the Everett hurlers had their revenge.
Three Sox pitchers combined on a five-hitter as Everett downed Boise 6-2 in Northwest League play.
Starter Ryan Moorer threw six solid innings and relievers Brandon Pullen and Christian Staehely polished it off as Everett erased the memories of the previous night, when the Hawks erupted for 13 runs and 18 hits.
Hawkins Gebbers and Mario Martinez each had two hits and Anthony Phillips drove in two runs as Everett (32-20) led from start to finish.
Everett also received good news on first baseman Gerardo Avila. The triple crown contender, who was knocked out of Tuesday’s game after being hit in the cheek by a pitch, escaped serious injury. However, he will be held out until the Sox return home next Thursday.
Burundi Davis went 2-for-3 to lead Boise (22-30).
Moorer made sure Everett had the chance to take control of the game early. The right-hander faced the minimum through the first four innings, with the only Boise baserunner erased when caught stealing. He ended up going six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out one to earn his first victory for Everett.
Boise starter Chris Rusin took the loss, surrendering four runs in four innings.
Everett opened the scoring in the top of the second, Blake Trinkler grounding a single to left to score Jose Rivero from second and make it 1-0.
The Sox then gave themselves a working margin in the fourth. Brandon Bantz drove in one run with a single up the middle, then Phillips rapped a two-run single to left, increasing the lead to 4-0.
Boise finally got its first hit and its first run in the fifth. D.J. Fitzgerald singled, advanced to third on Richard Jones’ single and scored on Jae-Hoon Ha’s sacrifice fly. The Hawks closed within two in the sixth when Logan Watkins’ single plated Davis.
But Everett restored its four-run lead in the seventh, with plenty of help from the Hawks. Matt Cerione reached on one error, then scored from second on a botched pickoff attempt that resulted in two more errors. Gebbers later scored on Martinez’s infield single for the game’s final run.
