PASCO— The Everett AquaSox hadn’t won on July 13th in ten years. No one will be able to say that again until at least 2018.
First baseman Manelik Pimentel scored three runs, starting pitcher Kenn Kasparek pieced together a decent performance in his first Northwest League start and the AquaSox erupted for four runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Tri-City Dust Devils 8-0 in the final game of a five game series Sunday night at Gesa Stadium in Pasco.
The AquaSox’s first shut-out of the year improved Everett’s record to 11-15 and salvaged what had been been a dismal series. After dropping the first three games, Everett has now won two in a row.
Offensively for the AquaSox, Pimentel was 4-for-2 and Henry Contreras and Dennis Raben each hit RBI doubles in the ninth to help put the game out of reach.
Kasparek, a 12th round Mariner’s draft pick out of the University of Texas, struck out five batters in five innings of work to pick up the win.
The AquaSox never trailed Sunday.
Everett struck first in the fourth inning, scoring two runs after loading the bases with no out. Contreras and Bennett Billingsley each had an RBI for Everett in the inning, which took advantage of two walks and a wild pitch to grab a 2-0 lead. Everett then added one insurance run in the sixth when Pimentel scored on a throwing error and a second insurance run in the eighth.
The AquaSox removed any remaining drama in the ninth, when Contreras and Raben each hit RBI doubles, and the AquaSox scored a total of four runs.
