Mark and Joan Sperandio, owners of the Everett AquaSox, announced this afternoon they have sold the minor league baseball team to Peter and Rita Carfagna, and their oldest son, Peter Jr.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The sale goes into effect Oct. 1.
The Sperandio family has owned and operated the AquaSox, a Class A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, since October of 1998.
Mark Sperandio said the decision to sell was based on a desire to move closer to family back east – a desire that grew stronger last year with the birth of the Sperandios’ first child.
“Ever since Cecilia was born, we have seriously felt the need to get back to our families,” Mark Sperandio said.
The Sperandios plan to work for the new owners for the “next few months” in order to effect a smooth transfer of ownership, then will move back east, Mark Sperandio said.
What will he and his wife do?
“We may get involved in baseball in some way, shape or form,” he said. “We’ve talked about other possible businesses to own and operate. We have a bunch of ideas running around our heads.”
The Carfagna family already owns one minor league franchise, the Lake County Captains, a Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians located in Eastlake, Ohio.
Peter Jr. will move from his home in Cleveland to the Northwest to oversee day-to-day operations of the AquaSox.
Peter Sr. said it’s too early to talk about any changes the new ownership may make, but said the new owners have no plans to relocate the franchise.
