AquaSox thump Hawks for fifth consecutive victory

EVERETT — The Everett AquaSox opened the second half of the season just the way they had hoped.

The AquaSox defeated the visiting Boise Hawks 13-8 before 2,294 fans Monday at Everett Memorial Stadium.

It was the fifth straight win for Everett (1-0 second half, 18-21 overall) as the AquaSox swept Boise (0-1, 19-20) in the five-game series.

The Frogs pounded out 14 hits to wrap up the series by scoring 55 runs on 67 hits. Moreover, the five-game sweep came following a difficult road stretch in which Everett lost five of six and mustered just 17 runs.

Onil Pena doubled three times, Johnny Adams homered and drove in four, Joseph Rosa homered and David Banuelos homered and drove in three to lead the Frogs at the plate.

The AquaSox trailed 2-0 through four innings, but took the lead for good with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Rosa’s solo home run — his first of the season from the right side — and Adams later hit a two-run homer to chase Boise starter Nick Kennedy.

Pena greeted reliever Ethan Westphal with a double, and Banuelos followed with a two-run shot to right-center as Everett took a 5-2 lead after five innings.

Everett answered with four more runs in the bottom of the sixth as Ronald Rosario and Pena had RBI doubles, and Adams added an RBI single to push the lead to 9-3.

But Boise added another run in the seventh and rallied for four runs in the eighth against relievers Fabian Roman and Paul Covelle. Sean Bouchard provided the big blow as he hit the first pitch he saw from Covelle over the fence in right-center to cut Everett’s lead to 9-8.

Everett answered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to put the game away.

Boise initially took the lead when JB Moss led off the top of the second with a solo home run to center field lead. The Hawks added another run in the fourth when Ryan Metzler singled and later scored on an error to push the lead to 2-0 before Everett began its offensive output.

Everett starter Jose Santiago (1-2) earned the win as he allowed three runs — two earned — on three hits and three walks. He struck out six.

The AquaSox head to Spokane for a brief three-game series against the Indians before returning home Friday.
