VANCOUVER, B.C. — The Everett AquaSox salvaged the final game of their first road series of the season as they defeated the Vancouver Canadians 5-1 Thursday before 5,288 fans at Nat Bailey Stadium.
The victory for Everett (3-5) snapped a three-game losing streak. Vancouver slipped to 5-3.
The Frogs were able to overcome five errors by their defense and five walks from starting pitcher Jose Santiago to earn the victory. Cody Mobley (1-1) earned the win with 3 2/3 innings of hitless relief.
The AquaSox took the lead with three runs in the top of the third inning. Joseph Rosa’s bases-loaded double scored Austin Grebeck, Joe Venturino and Brayan Hernandez to give the Frogs their biggest lead of the series.
Hernandez extended the lead to 4-0 with a solo home run to left in the top of the fifth. It was the first home run of the season for the sixth-ranked Seattle Mariners prospect.
Grebeck later doubled and scored on a Hernandez RBI single in the seventh to push the lead to 5-0.
The Canadians scored their lone run in the bottom of the ninth against Shorecrest High School grad and Everett reliever Ted Hammond when Reggie Pruitt reached on an error and scored on an RBI single by Lance Jones. The run was unearned.
Grebeck’s two hits were his first of the season. Venturino and Hernandez each had two hits and Hernandez scored twice.
Norberto Obeso had two hits for Vancouver as the Canadians collected just four hits as a team. Vancouver left 11 runners on base.
The AquaSox begin a three-game series at Tri-City at 7:15 p.m. Friday at Gesa Stadium. Everett returns home Monday to start a three-game series against Vancouver at Everett Memorial Stadium.
