AquaSox Update

Moorer makes second start for Sox

Everett right-hander Ryan Moorer (0-0, 6.00 earned-run average as of game-time Friday) made his second start in an AquaSox uniform Friday night. In fact, it was just the second start of his minor league career.

The Mariners’ 12th round selection in the 2007 Major League entry draft made 32 relief appearances for Class A Clinton of the Midwest League before joining Everett at the end of July.

Moorer’s first start with Everett came on August 1 — a three-inning, no-decision performance in an 11-6 win against Yakima.

The 22-year-old Peabody, Mass., native made 20 relief appearances for Everett in 2007. He compiled a 2-2 record with a 4.96 earned-run average in his first stint with the AquaSox.

In Clinton, Moorer had a 3-1 record with a 3.05 earned-run average in 441/3 innings of work.

Moorer lasted 41/3 innings Friday night, striking out four and yielding two runs on four hits.

Fatherly dedication

Infielder Hawkins Gebbers’ father routinely makes the 31/2-hour drive from his farm in Brewster to Everett to watch his son play.

And after the game ends, Gebbers’ father makes the trek all the way back to Brewster.

Gebbers, out of the lineup on Friday, has treated his father and AquaSox fans to a solid rookie season.

The first-year player from Brewster by way of Biola University (La Mirada, Calif.) is batting .317 with nine doubles, two home runs and 17 RBI in 37 games. Gebbers’ batting average ranks 10th in the Northwest League.

AquaSox welcome Emeralds

Everett begins a three-game series against the Eugene Emeralds at 7:05 p.m. tonight at Everett Memorial Stadium. The AquaSox split a six-game series on the road in Eugene June 28-July 3. This is the Emeralds’ first trip to Everett Memorial this season; Eugene (19-27) sits in last place in the Northwest League’s West Division, 12 games behind Salem-Kaizer.

Short hops

The AquaSox are currently fourth in the league in team pitching with a 4.38 earned-run average. … Everett leads the league with 44 home runs, 31 of which have been hit at Everett Memorial. … Heading into Friday’s contest, the AquaSox have outscored opponents 72-37 in the first two innings of games.
