Alumni update
There are six players from Everett’s opening-day roster who have moved on to different locations. Here’s a glance at how they’re doing.
Third baseman James Davenport is furthest along the chain, now plying his trade at High Desert of the high single-A California League. Though playing sporadically, he’s taken advantage of his chances, batting .500 in nine games.
A pair of pitchers were promoted to Wisconsin of the mid single-A Midwest League. Brett Lorin, who had been Everett’s top starter, had two quality starts before having a rougher time his last time out. He’s 0-1 with a 3.07 ERA. Johnny DuRocher, who was essentially perfect for Everett before getting a quick call-up, compiled a 1.69 ERA in four relief appearences before experiencing elbow pain. He was sent to Seattle’s complex in Peoria, Ariz., for rehabilitation and it’s hoped he will be able to return before the season’s over.
Shortstop George Soto was demoted to Pulaski of the short-season Class A Appalachian League after struggling offensively and defensively with the Sox. He’s improved marginally with Pulaski, batting .233 in 17 games with just four errors.
Pitcher Kenta Suda, who struggled mightily in Everett, has found his legs with Peoria of the rookie Arizona League. In six games (four starts), he’s 1-1 with a 2.83 ERA, though he’s still had control issues with 17 walks in 282/3 innings. Catcher Henry Contreras, also in Peoria, is batting .300 in part-time play.
Nunez injured: Everett second baseman Luis Nunez came out in the third inning of Sunday’s game with a leg injury.
Nunez, who came into the game third on the team in batting at .325, tweaked a hamstring beating out an infield single and pulled up lame as he crossed the bag. He walked slowly off the field upon being replaced for a pinch runner.
Everett manager Jose Moreno said the extent of Nunez’s injury was not known, but he’s not expected to play in tonight’s game.
Avoiding the skid: When Spokane beat Everett 3-2 Saturday, the league-leading Indians managed to avoid what one could describe as their first losing streak of the season. Spokane has not lost three consecutive games all season long, but had lost two straight going into Saturday.
However, Spokane manager Tim Hulett did not seem concerned with the prospect of a short skid, or streaks of any kind for that matter.
“So three games is a losing streak?” Hulett said with a chuckle. “No, we really try to stay away from those type of things because we’ve had some streaks (six- and five-game winning streaks) and I don’t want to get focused on the streaks, I want to get focused on the process each night and get prepared each night for each individual game, whether we’ve won 10 or lost 10.”
