EVERETT — Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Wade Miley got the Everett staff off to a strong start Friday night in a rehab assignment with the AquaSox.
And the rest of the Frogs’ pitchers followed suit.
Miley, Tim Viehoff and Brandon Miller combined to strike out 17 batters and Kristin Brito drew a walk-off walk to lead the AquaSox to a 3-2 victory over the Boise Hawks in 10 innings at Everett Memorial Stadium.
The Sox got off to a strong start thanks to a member of their major-league organization. Miley struck out seven and didn’t allow a hit through four quick scoreless innings in front of an announced crowd of 3,007 who came out to see the Mariner pitch.
Miley, who hadn’t pitched since a game against the Texas Rangers on June 12th, threw 54 pitches in the game as he rehabs a shoulder impingement that landed him on the 15-day disabled list.
Then Viehoff took over. He struck out five batters in 2 1/3 innings of work before Miller (1-1) came out and fanned five batters in 3 2/3 to earn the victory for Everett, which improved to 2-0 in extra-inning games early in the season.
On offense, the AquaSox tallied eight hits but it was a walk that clinched the victory for the Frogs. The first three Everett batters reached base in the bottom of the 10th before Brito drew the game-winning base on balls on a full count to give the AquaSox the win.
Everett struck first in the contest with a run in the bottom of the first inning. AquaSox leadoff hitter Bryson Brigman hit a single and scored after Kyle Lewis hit a double and Boise threw the ball away trying to get it back to the infield.
That lead held up until the sixth inning when Boise’s Steven Linkous hit an RBI double off Viehoff.
Everett struck right back with an RBI single by Jose Leal in the bottom half of the sixth that scored David Greer. Leal was thrown out on the play as he tried to reach second base.
Jacob Bosiokovic quickly tied the game with a solo homer to right center field in the top of the seventh.
The Frogs threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning with Leal and Austin Grebeck hitting back-to-back singles with one out. Leal got to third on a fielder’s choice by pinch-hitter Eric Filia but Nick Zammarelli struck out to end the inning.
Instead, both teams remained scoreless until Brito’s walk in the bottom of the 10th.
Lewis and Leal each finished 2-for-4 for Everett (5-3), which continues its five-game series with the Hawks Saturday.
