EUGENE, Or. – The Eugene Emeralds ended their 11-game losing streak by beating the Everett AquaSox 6-2 Tuesday.
The Frogs couldn’t find answers to the riddles Eugene Emeralds starting pitcher Ben Krosschell threw at them in the next to last game of the season.
During his 52/3-inning stint, Krosschell allowed only four hits and struck out eight AquaSox batters, giving up only one run.
Everett didn’t fare any better with Eugene’s relief pitching. The Sox scored one run against Emerald relief, but didn’t manage a hit after Krosschell left the game. That late lone run came on a walk and two errors.
Eugene’s light-hitting catcher, Brandon Gottier, came into Tuesday’s game batting .229 with seven RBI. Gottier burned the Sox for two doubles in four at-bats and had two RBI.
Justin Thomas pitched well in relief of Everett starter Harold Williams, who threw 19 pitches (one wild), walked two batters and left the game with shoulder discomfort without ever recording an out. Williams was responsible for the three runs Eugene scored in the first inning.
Williams walked the first two batters of the game, then gave up a run-scoring single to Tim Turner. Williams next threw a wild pitch that advanced runners to second and third. Seth Johnson fouled the next pitch out of play. With the count 1-1 on Johnson, two men on base and nobody out, Williams was pulled from the game due to shoulder discomfort.
Thomas gave up a run-scoring single to the first batter he faced. With runners at the corners, Thomas got Gottier to ground into a double play. Turner scored on the play to make the score 3-0.
J.B. Tucker provided about the only highlight of the game for the AquaSox with a home run to lead off the second inning, making the score 3-1.
