AquaSox’s offense silenced in 5-1 road loss to Hillsboro

HILLSBORO, Ore. — The Everett AquaSox ran into some impressive pitching Thursday as they fell 5-1 to the Hillsboro Hops before 3,203 fans at Ron Tonkin Field in the second game of a five-game series.

Tyler Mark (2-2) earned the win for the Hops as he scattered six hits and allowed one run in six innings. Four Hillsboro relievers combined for three perfect innings as the final 11 AquaSox were retired in order, including seven via strikeout.

The Hops (13-14) broke the scoreless tie in the fourth when Justin Chigbogu’s two-run home run gave Hillsboro a 2-0 lead.

Kyle Lewis drove in Bryson Brigman with an RBI single in the sixth to tie teammate Kristian Brito with his league-best 21st RBI.

Eric Filia followed with a double to put runners at second and third with one out, but Brito struck out and Nick Zammarelli grounded out to end the threat and preserve Hillsboro’s 2-1 lead.

The Hops immediately got that run back and more in the bottom of the sixth as Luis Veras’ two-out, two-run double scored Jason Morozowski and Chigbogu. Marcus Wilson followed with an RBI single to score Veras and the Hops took a 5-1 lead into the seventh.

Filia had two hits including a double for the Frogs (14-13).

The series continues at 7 p.m. Friday. Brandon Miller (1-2, 4.08 ERA) will start for the AquaSox against Hillsboro’s Jeferson Mejia (2-2, 6.26).
