EVERETT — The Archbishop Murphy boys basketball team had to work overtime to earn a non-league victory Wednesday night.
J.D. Melton made the winning basket in overtime and just missed a double-double with a team-high 14 points and nine rebounds to lead the Wildcats to a 49-47 overtime victory over Lambrick Park, B.C., at Archbishop Murphy High School.
“It was a low-scoring game,” Murphy head coach Jerry Zander said. “(Lambrick) went up by five points in the fourth quarter and we put on a full-court press.”
The Wildcats rallied for a lead off their press, but the Lions’ Nathan Darnell hit a tying 3-pointer with seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
“He’s a good shooter,” Zander said of Darnell, who had a game-high 15 points. “Most of his points came from outside.”
Melton broke a 47-47 tie in the extra period, sinking a layup with eight seconds remaining to seal the Wildcats’ win.
Murphy point guard Jared Smith had 11 points, five assists and no turnovers, and J.J. Quinlan added 10 points, seven rebounds and five steals.
