MT. VERNON — Archbishop Murphy earned a return trip to state with a 1-0 win over Cedarcrest in a 2A District 1 girls soccer semifinal game Tuesday at Mt. Vernon High School.
Sam Pettinger scored the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute off assists by Lindsey Bos and Caroline Brawner.
“This is the third time we’ve played Cedarcrest,” Murphy coach Dick Henderson said. “It’s an old rivalry and a hard rivaly. It’s hard to beat a team three times a row.
“I feel like we played better second half. We applied a lot more pressure and had more opportunities. But it was hard to push one home.
“We sealed it off with our defense. We were pretty solid with our back four and keeper (Alexa Hughes). We played well with a lead.”
Murphy (15-2-1 overall) finished third in the state last year after losing to eventual champion, Fife, in the semifinals.
The Wildcats play for the district championship at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Vernon H.S.
Kori Butterfield was in goal for Cedarcrest.
