I was in Kennewick all weekend covering the 2A, 3A and 4A state volleyball championships. It meant that I was entirely out of the loop when Archbishop Murphy High School announced Friday that its football team was forced to forfeit its Nov. 3 playoff victory for using an ineligible player, abruptly ending the squad’s season.

Now I’m back in Everett and I just received a press release that adds a new twist to the story. Tomorrow morning, Murphy players plan to hold an 8 a.m. press conference in Renton at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association headquarters (435 Main Ave. S).
The WIAA Executive Board on Friday upheld previous lower-level rulings to enforce the forfeits. But now it seems Murphy players hope to gather enough public support to pressure the WIAA into reversing its decision. Read The Herald Tuesday for more details about the team’s last-ditch effort to save its season.
