MOUNTLAKE TERRACE- The Archbishop Murphy girls basketball team rode a fourth-quarter offensive explosion to a 44-38 victory over Overlake Saturday night in the third-place game of the Class A tri-district tournament at Mountlake Terrace H.S.

With a state berth already secured, the Wildcats played loosely for the first three quarters. But they looked like an entirely different team in the fourth quarter.

After shooting a combined 8-for-32 from the field in the first three quarters, Archbishop Murphy shot 7-for-12 from the field in the fourth quarter to outscore Overlake 22-9.

“It seemed like we were stuck in the mud in the first half,” Archbishop Murphy coach Bill Kelley said. “But we challenged the girls at halftime and they answered in the fourth quarter.”

The Wildcats’ Lauren Coate scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the fourth quarter. Coate finished with a game-high 21 points and 15 rebounds.

The victory gives Archbishop Murphy a No. 1 seed at next week’s state tournament in Yakima.

“We won three games in a row including today. We finished the season with 20 wins and now we’re a No. 1 seed going in to the state tournament. It’s outstanding and I am proud of these girls,” Kelley said.
