Archbishop Murphy keeps Lakewood from clinching district playoff berth

EVERETT — Archbishop Murphy kept Lakewood from clinching a 2A District 1 playoff spot with a 1-0 Cascade Conference victory Thursday.

In the process, the Wildcats kept alive an outside shot taking the berth from Lakewood.

The lone goal of the game was scored in the 30th minute when Alexis Magana took a crossing pass and fired a deflected shot into the right corner of the goal.

“(Lakewood has) a very, very solid defense. They haven’t given up more than one goal all season in a game,” Wildcats head coach Jon Echols said. “So, I think the key was getting a goal early and scoring first. And, obviously, being able to shut them out. Our defense and our goalkeeper played really well.”

The loss was just the second of the season for Lakewood, which is now 10-2 in the league and can still clinch a district playoff spot with a win or tie in either of its final two games. Archbishop Murphy is now 8-4 and in third place in the league.

“As a team, we’ve really improved as the season has gone along. We’re playing with a lot of confidence right now,” Echols said. “When you look at the three teams at the top — Lakewood, Cedarcrest and ourselves — we’re all playing pretty good soccer right now.”
