Archbishop Murphy softball team wins title

MOUNT VERNON – The Archbishop Murphy softball team scored six runs in the first three innings to run away with the Class A tri-district championship, beating Coupeville 8-0 Saturday at Skagit Valley College.

Kristen Linscott hit a two-run double, while Lindsey Shandera was 2-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Wildcats.

Both Archbishop Murphy and Coupeville qualified for next week’s state tournament in Pasco.

The Wildcats picked up 10-0 and 11-5 victories over Bear Creek and Cascade Christian, respectively, to reach the championship game.

Linscott pitched every single inning for Archbishop Murphy picking up three victories while giving up only five runs on 10 hits.

3A Northwest District meet: Lynnwood’s Sarah Owen qualified for next week’s state meet in two events Friday, finishing second in the 200- and first in the 400-meter dashes. Teammate Caroline Carter also won the 300 hurdles and the Royals qualified their 1,600 relay squad.

A tri-district meet: King’s athletes won 12 of the 18 events to overwhelm the competition. King’s scored 247.5 points, more than triple the total of second-place Charles Wright Academy. King’s won all three relays and the Knights’ Julie Reese won all three throws.Breyanne Nordtvedt won both hurdles races and placed second in the triple jump. She also ran on the 1,600 relay team. Archbishop Murphy’s Teresa Mathias qualified for state in two events, finishing second in the javelin and third in the 100-meter dash. The Wildcats’ Rachel Ogle qualified for state in both hurdles. Coupeville’s Amy Mouw won the 800.

3A Northwest District meet: The Meadowdale doubles team of Tanya Subcleff and Whitney Frank qualified for next week’s state tournament by finishing second. Subcleff and Frank defeated Jeaneen Brewster and Laina Vanderstoep of Burlington-Edison 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the second-place match late Friday night.
