SHORELINE — Arlington senior Courtney Arnold converted a game-winning penalty kick as the top-seeded Eagles clinched their third consecutive trip to the 3A state playoffs with a 3-2 shootout win over fifth-seeded Shorecrest in the nightcap of Tuesday’s Class 3A District 1 semifinals at Shoreline Stadium.
The Eagles (14-3-1) made all five penalty kicks and junior goalkeeper Brielle Schrader saved Shorecrest’s third attempt, which proved to be the difference in the 5-4 shootout margin. Arlington will play for the district title on Saturday against seventh-seeded Snohomish, which rallied for a dramatic 3-2 win over Stanwood in the other semifinal.
Shorecrest (11-5-3) took an early lead in the 27th minute when junior Maggie Taylor fired a 25-yard free kick into the back of the net. Arlington senior Kirsten Phillips evened the match with a 46th-minute putback goal and senior McKenzie Buell scored in the 71st to give the Eagles a 2-1 edge. Shorecrest senior Gabby Lacson tied the match one minute later to force extra time.
Shorecrest will face Northwest Conference top seed Squalicum in a winner-to-state elimination match on Thursday.
