Around the NFL

CARDINALS: Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said Thursday that he’s leaning toward starting Kurt Warner at quarterback in Saturday night’s preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Warner, who took over as the starter last season when Matt Leinart suffered a season-ending collarbone injury on Oct. 7, didn’t play in last week’s preseason opener against New Orleans.

COWBOYS: Nickel linebacker Kevin Burnett will have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee today, two days after spraining the knee in 11-on-11 drills against Denver.

NFL: Suspended Dallas cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones says he has sent a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell asking to be allowed to play this season. While Jones is allowed to play in preseason games, the team doesn’t know when it will find out if he will be fully reinstated for the regular season. Goodell has said only that a decision would come before the regular season.

“As part of the reinstatement review, he was given an opportunity to submit any relevant information he would like to provide. He was asked to do that by this Friday if he chose to do so,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an e-mail.

GIANTS: Federal investigators have charged a Philadelphia man with trying to blackmail New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin by sending him letters threatening to expose a fictitious sexual tryst with two women. Herbert Alex Simpson, 30, is accused of sending Coughlin two letters on July 30 and July 31, allegedly from women claiming to have had a sexual encounter with the coach in December when the Giants were in Philadelphia. The letters demanded the coach pay $20,000 to $30,000 or his life would be made “a living hell by doing something to (his) family,” according to court documents filed Thursday.

In other team news, the Giants placed offensive tackle Shane Olivea on season-ending injured reserve with a back injury Thursday and waived defensive end Antonio Reynolds.

JAGUARS: Jacksonville signed veteran free agent defensive tackle Jonathan Lewis and waived rookie running back Lavarus Giles on Thursday.

SAINTS: Defensive tackle Hollis Thomas, a starter for the New Orleans Saints for much of the past two seasons, hurt his right triceps during practice Wednesday and will be sidelined about two months.

TITANS: Starting right tackle David Stewart underwent arthroscopic surgery Thursday and will be sidelined two to three weeks.

Thursday’s games

Philadelphia 24, Carolina 13: At Philadelphia, Jake Delhomme was 9-for-14 for 54 yards in his first real action since ligament-replacement surgery in October, but Tony Hunt’s 51-yard touchdown run with 2:15 left led the Eagles to victory.

Buffalo 24, Pittsburgh 21: At Toronto, Trent Edwards was near-perfect in two series, going 9-for-11 for 104 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bills.
