Coupeville basketball
The senior post set a Class 1A state tournament record with 10 blocked shots in a game against Zillah. Black was named to the all-tournament first team. She finished the tournament 10th in scoring with a 12.5 points per game average, third in rebounds with 36 and first in blocks with 19.
“The official tournament stats are notoriously bad,” Coupeville coach Greg Oldham said. “They have one guy doing them and no spotter. We had her with a triple double against Zillah. We had her with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 13 blocks.”
Black led Coupeville to an eighth-place finish in the tournament.
“Beyond the blocks were all the shots she changed,” Oldham said. “Kids would come into the middle, see her coming and just throw up a desperation attempt.”
Oldham said the 6-foot-2 Black has a 6-7 wing span and is very athletic.
“She jumps well. She’s quick on her feet,” he said.
“She has studied shot blocking. I’ve coached several good shot blockers, and I’ve been working with her on baiting shooters. She allows space to go up and get it without fouling. She has studied that.”
Black has been named to the Washington State Basketball Coaches Association’s 1A all-state team and will participate in the all-state series.
