Sultan basketball
The sophomore point guard began his high school basketball career with a triple-double, scoring 23 points, dishing out 20 assists and grabbing 10 rebounds in a 93-47 victory over Klahowya.
Sultan coach Nate Trichler said Perkins got many of his assists as the result of breaking Klahowya’s press.
“He’s very quick and an excellent ball-handler,” Trichler said. “He just gave it to wherever the help came from.”
Perkins’ ability to break the press resulted in numerous lay-ins for his teammates.
And his command of the point was inspirational, Trichler said.
“Probably the best play he made in the game came in the first minute,” Trichler said. “He was pressing the ball, tipped it loose and dove on the floor to retrieve it. It really sparked us. He’s just an unselfish player.”
Klahowya began pressuring Perkins in the second half, leading to several more assists.
“He broke it, drew a double-team and got rid of it,” Trichler said.
Tara Holgate
Snohomish County Christian basketball
The senior post began her week with a pair of double-doubles and capped it with a triple-double. She had 25 points, 18 rebounds, three steals and eight blocks in a 49-28 win over La Conner. She had 32 points, 15 rebounds, three assists and four blocks in a 49-28 win over Bush. And she scored 17 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and had 17 blocks in a 44-34 win over Seattle Lutheran.
At 6-foot-4 Holgate dominates most Class B opponents.
“The competition’s not going to be there all year, especially for her,” Snohomish County Christian coach Sasha Anderson said.
But Seattle Lutheran got physical with her, Anderson said.
“She had to work a lot harder in that game. Teams are beginning to recognize that their priority has to be shutting her down,” Anderson said. “They double- and triple-teamed her. She had no shots in the first quarter.”
Which makes her performance in the subsequent three quarters all the more amazing.
A tremendous rebounder and shot blocker, Holgate, who has signed to play college basketball at Eastern Washington, gets five or six put-back baskets per game.
“She’s not necessarily a workhorse, she doesn’t get a hand on every ball,” Anderson said, “but she’s so good at positioning her body. She’s an amazing shot blocker, she can block with either hand, and she’s phenomenal at finding the ball.”
Holgate, who received honorable mention on the WashingtonPreps.com Class B all-state team last season, has taken her game to a new level this year, Anderson said.
“She’s grown so much in the mental game.”
