Athletes of the week

Carl Merisko

Snohomish boys golf

The senior shot a 6-under-par 66 Thursday at the par-72 Walter Hall Golf Course in Everett to lead Snohomish to victory at the Wesco North Group B meet. Merisko made eight birdies on the 18-hole course to win the event by six strokes.

“He made a lot of putts out there,” Snohomish golf coach Joey Mutcheson said. “He just put it all together. He’s a very, very good golfer.”

It was the second straight week a Snohomish golfer has come through with a spectacular score. Jason Calamaro shot a 66 last week at Cedarcrest Golf Course in Marysville.

“Our team scores have been pretty good,” Mutcheson said. “We’re very happy with the way we’re playing right now.”

Mutcheson said Merisko is a “very good ball-striker” who can drive it approximately 280 yards.

“He hits the ball solidly all the time with his driver or with his irons,” Mutcheson said.

The second round is scheduled for Wednesday at Legion Memorial.
