Athletes of the Week

The freshman pitcher was forced to start three games in two days when her fellow starter, Katlin Kennedy, was hit on her throwing arm by an errant ball during warm-ups. Huggins responded with a 15-strikeout game in an 8-2 win over Brewster and she won both ends of a doubleheader against Orcas Island. She also went 7-for-11 at the plate in the three games.

“It was a busy weekend for her,” Archbishop Murphy coach Bruce Foxe said.

Huggins plays first base when she’s not pitching.

“From what we’ve seen so far, she’s the best first baseman in the (Northwest 1A) league,” Foxe said.

Huggins, who is 4-1 on the mound, is still developing as a pitcher, Foxe said.

“She throws mainly fastballs,” he said. “She’s working on spotting her fastball. Her change can freeze batters and she’s working on a drop ball. She still has to work her way up.”

The senior first baseman batted 2-for-3 in an 11-3 win over Snohomish; had a single, double and triple and scored two runs in a 4-3 victory over Snohomish, and hit a grand slam and drove in five runs in an 18-6 win over Arlington.

Lowe began the season on the bench, but worked his way into the starting lineup.

“He worked hard, stayed after practice, did all the extra things,” Stanwood coach Tony Wolden said. “I like to see a guy who works hard get a shot.”

Wolden started Lowe in a non-league game against Lynden and Lowe hit the ball hard, according to his coach. Lowe has been in the lineup since.

“When they make it count, they deserve a shot,” Wolden said.

Lowe has also worked his way up in the batting order. He hit eighth in the first game against Snohomish, seventh in the second and fourth against Arlington.
