Athletes of the Week

The senior pitcher/shortstop threw a four-hitter with 14 strikeouts in a 2-0 victory over Monroe. He had a two-out, three-run double in the sixth inning to break a tie in a 6-3 win over Oak Harbor. And he batted 2-for-5 in a 13-10 victory over Oak Harbor.

In his past three starts, Fields, who has a 4-0 record and a 1.20 earned-run average, has struck out 38 batters. He now has 44 strikeouts in 27 innings.

“He throws a splitter that people chase,” Lake Stevens coach Rodger Anderson said. “He’s the only pitcher we have who’s a strikeout pitcher.”

Fields is also a key part of the Vikings’ offense. He bats second and has a .404 average and a .500 on-base percentage.

Matt Stevens, who has signed an NCAA letter of intent to play baseball at the University of Washington, is generally considered the Vikings’ most serious offensive threat, Anderson said. But he thinks Fields is Stevens’ equal.

“He has a higher batting average and he comes through in the clutch,” Anderson said.

In the past week, both Washington and Gonzaga have called to inquire about Fields, Anderson said.

“I think he’s a Division 1 player,” Anderson said.

The sophomore runner set a meet record of 2 minutes, 14.42 seconds in winning the 800-meter run at the Pasco Invitational. She was also second in the 400 to defending state champion Bekka Nobles of Rogers. In Thursday’s weekly Western Conference meet, she ran the 200 for the first time in her career and won in 26.36 seconds, one of the fastest times in the state this season. She also won the 400 and ran on the winning 1,600 relay team.

Moore recently broke the school record in the 800 by four seconds when she ran a 2:11.37 to finish fourth in the event at the Arcadia (Calif.) Invitational. Her time was the seventh-fastest in the nation this season.

“She’s a smart runner,” Everett coach Mary Veneziani said. “She knows herself well. She’s not afraid at all. She guts it out.”

Veneziani said Moore has improved largely because of her off-season work. She ran cross country in the fall, even though distance races are not her favorite, Veneziani said. And she participated in each of the University of Washington high school invitational indoor meets last winter.

“When Cori sets her mind to something, she does it,” Veneziani said. “She’s a very focused athlete.”
