Athletes of the Week

The senior won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles Saturday at the Eason Invitational in Snohomish.

Competing against mostly Class 4A athletes, Nash posted times that rank among the best in the state this season. Nash, who finished second in both hurdles events last spring at the Class 2A state meet, completed the 100 hurdles in 15.10 seconds – just off the state’s best of 15.07 – despite hitting the second hurdle. She then equaled the state’s best reported time of 45.60 in winning the 300.

“I was a little rusty,” Nash said. “But, I felt pretty good.”

Lakewood coach Mike Evans said he likes what he sees so far and believes Nash will get even better in the final weeks of the season.

“I think she’s right on track for what she wants to accomplish at the end of the season,” Evans said. “Some goals are going to come to fruition here in about three or four weeks.”

The pitcher-third baseman led the Warriors to three victories last week that kept Edmonds-Woodway atop the Western Conference South Division standings.

Beattiger batted .667 for the week (8-of-12) and drove in seven of his team’s 23 runs. Hitting No. 4 in the lineup, Beattiger hit three doubles and a triple, scored three runs and walked three times.

“We’re not a one-man team, but Jake certainly makes the people around him in the lineup better,” said Edmonds-Woodway coach Joe Webster, whose team took a one-game lead over Kamiak last week. “Teams know that they don’t want to have to pitch to Jake.”

Beattiger pitched seven innings of an eventual 12-inning E-W victory over Shorecrest on Friday, allowing only one earned run. His biggest hit came on Wednesday when he hit a two-run double to give the Warriors a lead in the top of the eighth inning.

“That was a big hit,” Webster said.
