Athletes of the Week

The senior running back carried 17 times for a school record 382 yards, an average of 22.5 yards per carry, in a 33-12 victory over Lynnwood.

Gallagher eclipsed Landon Hall’s single-game school record by 6 yards and is now 366 yards shy of Hall’s single-season rushing school record of 1,574 yards.

E-W coach John Gradwohl said Gallagher’s accomplishments are even more amazing because, at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, he is undersized for a tailback.

“He’s the smallest I’ve ever had,” Gradwohl said. “But he hits the hole hard and runs like he’s bigger than he is. He has good speed. If he gets outside, he’ll gain a few.”

Gradwohl said Gallagher’s speed in getting to holes gives him an edge, too.

“If you don’s stop him at the line right away, he’ll break an arm tackle and take it to the next level,” Gradwohl said. “He’s not afraid of contact. He’ll get the hard yards, too. He’s not just a sweep guy. He’ll run it up the gut, too.

“He’s a team guy, too. He doesn’t care about his number of carries, he just want’s to win. His hard work and leadership has kept our team in it, despite an 0-4 start. His love for the game brings the other guys with him.”

The junior swimmer swam a state-meet qualifying time of 1:59.44 in the 200-yard freestyle, bettered the state qualifying time by three seconds with a personal best 1:08.09 in the 100 breaststroke and set a school record with a state qualifying time of 25.24 seconds in the 50 freestyle, while swimming the first leg of the 200 freestyle relay during a 121-65 dual meet victory over Shorewood.

Kamiak coach Chris Erickson said Brunner is swimming better this season after battling a shoulder injury as a sophomore.

“Last year she was a little down,” Erickson said. “She was afraid to train.”

He said her performances last season, which included a second-straight third-place finish at state in the 100 backstroke, were the product of guts not training.

“She’s a great competitor and an obvious talent, but this year we’re seeing the result of more conditioning.

“She’s doing amazing things in practice again.”
