Costello may be a freshman, but he’s got the legs of a senior.

Costello dominated the sprint events Wednesday and Friday at the Western Conference North Division track meet.

He passed a competitor in the last 10 meters of the 100-meter final, which was stocked with mostly juniors and seniors. Costello backed that up with a solid victory in the 200. His times of 11.20 and 22.78 seconds put him among the state’s elite.

He also ran on the Tomahawks’ winning 400- and 1,600 meter relay teams as M-P won the meet by one point. Costello’s four events provided 48 of the Tommies’ 146 points. Costello and his relay teams also won all of their preliminary races with ease.

“Freshman boys don’t normally do things like that,” M-P coach Randy Davis said. “He obviously can be very, very special.”

Costello will get his biggest test of the season on Friday when he is expected to meet Kamiak’s Derrick Bradley in the District I 100 and 200 finals at Stanwood High School.

Other top boys track performers: Derrick Bradley, Kamiak; McKane Lee, Arlington; Derek Fekkes, Stanwood; Warren Eickoff, Snohomish, JaMichael Bailey, Cascade; Matt Heinle, Edmonds-Woodway; Brandon Bilyeu, South Whidbey; Travis Boyd, Kamiak; Stephan Kulpa, Oak Harbor; Kevin Hutchinson, Lake Stevens; Brenton Bodewig, Arlington; Ryan Roache, Snohomish; Tom Patten, Snohomish; Adam Roe, King’s.

The junior helped Lake Stevens to a runnerup finish at the North Division meet with a dominant showing in the sprints.

Anderson’s winning time of 12.33 seconds in the 100-meter final was among the state’s best this season, as was her time of 25.85 in the 200.

Anderson anchored a Lake Stevens 400-meter relay team that won easily. Things were not quite as easy in the 800 relay.

Anderson took the baton for the final leg trailing by about 7 meters. She made up the distance and the Vikings won the event in 1:46.49 – just over a half-second faster than Snohomish, which won the meet but was second in that event.

“If felt really good,” said Anderson, after her 100 victory. “A lot of work has gone into this.”
