The junior sprinter scorched the track at the District I meet with some of the state’s best performances this season.

Bradley’s time of 10.69 seconds in the 100-meter final was the best automatic-timed 100 of the year.

His 21.6-second finish in the 200 was one of the state’s fastest hand-held times.

Both times would have won events at the 2001 Class 4A state meet, where Bradley finished fifth in the 100 and third in the 200. Bradley and 2001 sprint triple-crown winner Craig Everhart of Lincoln are the top two returning sprinters for this year’s state meet, which will be at the Lincoln Bowl in Tacoma Friday and Saturday.

“I didn’t feel nervous, just really ready,” said Bradley, who is one of the state’s top football recruits. “I was more than ready. I was concentrating.

His best performance may have come in the 400-meter relay. The Kamiak team was in last place when Bradley took the handoff. He passed everyone and anchored the team to victory.

Emily Kling

Emily Kling

The versatile junior won two events and ran on two winning relay teams to help the Panthers win the District I meet.

Kling won long jump and triple jump contests against competition that was likely as strong as she will face this weekend at the state meet.

On Wednesday, she won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 7.25 inches, which would have been good enough to win the 2001 state meet.

Her distance of 37 feet, 4.25 – and the jumps of the next two district finishers – would have won state last year.

Kling, who finished second in both events at the 2001 state meet, was more relieved than satisfied.

“I was just concerned about making it to state,” said Kling, who helped the Panthers win last year’s state title. “The competition was great. I was worried.”
