The freshman striker scored a goal and had an assist Saturday to help Archbishop Murphy finish third in the Class A/B soccer tournament.
Despite constant double-teaming by the Brewster defense, Taylor broke a 1-1 tie with her 23rd goal of the season with six minutes remaining.
Two minutes later, Taylor fired a shot that bounced off teammate Megan Wolff’s hip for the final goal in the 3-1 victory.
“She was locked down the whole game,” Wildcats coach Pat Jack said. “When Kat got that goal to put us in the lead, (Brewster) just kind of quit.”
Brewster’s plan to surround their own goal with defenders and put two player on Taylor worked for much of the game, but Taylor’s quickness proved too much for even the best of defenses.
“She just stepped around the them and took off,” Jack said. “Then it was one-on-one with the goal.
The senior fullback-linebacker was a dominant force on both offense and defense for Darrington in a 37-12 loss in a Class B-11 state playoff quarterfinal.
McCoy carried the ball 19 times for 82 yards and scored all the Loggers’ points on a pair of 2-yard TD runs.
The 5-foot-10, 180-pound senior also caught three passes for 53 yards, and made several key tackles against No. 1 Willapa Valley.
“We knew we could run the ball on them.” Darrington coach Rob Wales said. “We feel we can run on anybody.”
McCoy firmly believed he could lead the Loggers to a state title. He was the most visibly shaken of a shocked Darrington team after the game.
“We had a fantastic year,” Wales said. “We just happened to meet up early in these playoffs with the most talented team in the state.”
