Athletes of the Week

The senior swimmer swam 4A state meet qualifying times in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races, and swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay team in a 99-81 loss to Kamiak. He also won the 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley races, and swam on two winning relays in a 107-68 victory over Anacortes.

“He’s off to a real good start this season,” said Lake Stevens coach Jeff Tinias. “He’s healthy and swimming well. He trains hard. We’re looking forward to district and state.”

Hinricksen is primarily a freestyler, but he competes well in the other strokes as his victory in the IM indicates. Tinias said Hinricksen prefers the sprints, but has the discipline to handle the 500.

“He definitely likes the 50 and 100,” Tinias said, “but it’s looking like the 200 is a possibility, too.”

Other top boys swimming performers: Peter Mullins, Jackson; Kyle Fankhauser, Everett; Trevor Bigelow, Everett.

Lola Nelson

The senior forward scored 18 points and notched the eventual game-winning basket with 20 seconds to play in a 46-43 victory over Ingraham. She also had 11 rebounds and three steals. She scored 27 points on 12-for-16 shooting and had 14 rebounds in a 61-43 victory over South Whidbey. And she scored 23 points on 10-for-14 shooting and had eight rebounds and three steals in a 54-53 loss to Sedro-Woolley.

Nelson is averaging 20.8 points and 11 rebounds per game.

“She really has a nice touch on her inside shot,” Sultan coach Matt Koehler said. “She’s left-handed, but she has worked hard lately at finishing with both hands.”

Last season, Koehler said, opposing defenders focused on keeping Nelson from driving to her left. Now, however, she has become a threat from either direction.

Defensively, Nelson has been charged with guarding the opponent’s best post player.

“She has really improved defensively,” Koehler said. “She’s just an all-around player.”
