The sophomore guard scored 22 points in Friday’s victory over Grace Academy and added 25 Saturday against Orcas Island.

Jones also had nine steals and eight rebounds in Saturday’s 57-30 triumph that pushed Darrington’s record to 7-3.

“Most of her baskets came from defensive pressure,” Darrington coach Cameron Ross said. “She and her teammates created turnovers that led to easy baskets on layups.”

Ross said Jones has also become an accomplished shooter. The 5-foot-6 Jones, who pulled down 20 rebounds Dec. 29 against La Conner, made three 3-point shots against Orcas Island. She made one in the 79-22 thumping of Grace Academy, which was Darrington’s first Northwest B League game of the season.

“She really stepped up her game right before Christmas,” Ross said. “She’s motivated to get better.”

The junior wrestler defeated a returning state champion in the 119-pound championship match of the Decatur Tournament Saturday.

Ty Human

Human, who finished 5th in the 112-pound class at last year’s Class 3A meet despite an injury-plagued season, held off Heritage’s Jesse Getchel for a 1-0 decision at Decatur High School.

Human managed an escape point to begin the third round to beat last year’s Class 4A 112-pound state champ. Human and teammate Christian Anderson, who won the 160 championship bout, were named the tournament’s outstanding wrestlers.

“It was a great match,” Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said. “They went through a couple of good flurries. Both wrestlers were close on the edge to scoring, and kind of scrambled out of predicaments.”

Human began the second round in the up position, and managed to ride Getchel the entire two minutes to keep the senior from escaping. Human began the third round on the bottom, and pulled away quickly for the decisive point.

“That’s pretty hard to do against a returning state champion,” Barnes said.
