Athletes of the week

The 6-foot-6 senior forward scored a game-high 27 points and had 14 rebounds in an 83-76 victory over Snohomish. He also scored a game-high 22 points in a 76-53 win over Lake Stevens.

“We knew it would be important to establish Marcus inside in that game (Snohomish) because they’re not big inside,” Stanwood coach Nate DuChesne said. “You have to credit his teammates. They did a good job getting him the ball.”

Steele scored 20 of his 22 points against Lake Stevens in the first half.

“He’s just a presence for us inside,” DuChesne said. “He opens up things on the perimeter for our outside shooters.

“He’s a team captain and shows his leadership. He plays hard and has a great attitude.”

The 5-foot-8 junior forward/guard scored 10 of her game-high 21 points in the second half as Lake Stevens outscored Mount Vernon 42-16 en route to a 74-35 win. She also scored 14 of her game-high 18 points during an 18-2 third-quarter run in a 57-31 victory over Stanwood.

“Her offense has been one of the keys to our success,” Lake Stevens coach Steve Berg said. “She’s one of those kids who always plays full tilt.”

Because the Vikings lack size, they often play three guards on the floor at the same time, forcing Cochrun to defend against taller players. Berg said she has handled the task very well.

“She has played better than we expected,” Berg said. “Now, we’re starting to expect it out of her every game.”
