The senior 125-pounder won his fourth straight individual title Saturday in dominating fashion.
It took Barnes only 52 seconds to pin Spanaway Lake’s Mickey Elliott in the title bout. Three of his four matches lasted a minute or less.
His father, Lake Stevens coach Burke Barnes, said it will be a different feeling next year.
“He’s been around the program even before his four years,” Brent Barnes said. “He started out sitting in my lap.”
Barnes said he treasured winning his fourth state championship just as much as his two national championships.
“It’s pretty exciting,” said Barnes, who will attend Boise State in the fall.
Barnes said he wanted to establish momentum quickly in his matches to take away any thought the competition had about winning.
“It’s good to get the first takedown in every match,” said Barnes, who finished his prep career 128-4. “It puts a little thought in their mind that they’re going to have a problem.”

The junior center scored 20 points on 6-for-6 shooting from the field and 8-for-9 shooting from the free-throw line in a 69-41 victory over Shorewood. She also scored 20 points and grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds in a 57-47 victory over Jackson.
“Early in the year, she had some trouble with her shot going in,” said Kamiak coach Doug Montzingo. “It’s going in now.”
At 5-foot-10 Jenkins is undersized for a post player. But Montzingo said she compensates for her height disadvantage with great leaping ability.
“She can handle the ball and shoot outside, but her strength is inside right now,” Montzingo said.
Kamiak finished second in the Western Conference South to Meadowdale, a Class 3A team, and will be the division’s No. 1 seed in the district playoffs, which begin Wednesday.
“She couldn’t be peaking at a better time,” Montzingo said. “Pressure doesn’t affect her. She loves to play the game. She’s athletic and a team player. She can do a lot of things.”
