Athletes of week: Kristi Leiter, Chad Gorney

The junior pitcher/first baseman won two games to improve her record to 6-0. In an 8-3 victory over Monroe, she pitched five scoreless innings and batted 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. In a 6-2 victory over Snohomish, she batted 2-for-3 with a double, two stolen bases, a run scored and two runs batted in.

When she’s not pitching, Leiter plays first base and made just one error in Lake Stevens’ first 11 games for a .990 fielding percentage.

The left-hander hits second in the batting order and is counted on to start and continue rallies for the Vikings, said assistant coach Tina Bauer.

“Kristi gets a lot of extra-base hits,” Bauer said.

Other top softball performers: Alyssa Smoke, Cascade; Christie Robinson, South Whidbey; Gloria Austin, Cascade; Tiffany Thompson, Cascade; Katy Barstad, Mountlake Terrace; Kristina Thorson, Shorecrest; Heidi Heric, Shorewood; Michelle Young, Monroe; Lauren Shatz, Monroe; Victoria Coury, Everett; Amy Sisco, Everett; Carrie Anderson, South Whidbey; Kristen Linscott, Archbishop Murphy; Lindsay Shandera, Archbishop Murphy; Amy Sisco, Everett.

The senior golfer found the Walter Hall course to his liking last week. He shot an even-par 72 to lead the Bruins to first place in the weekly Western Conference North Division Group B meet. And he fired a 3-under-par 69 to lead the Bruins to first place and a school record in the Everett School District meet. All five Bruins shot 75 or better to set a team score record of 2-over-par 362.

Rounds in the 60s are rare in high school golf. Gorney’s was just the second in the last two seasons, said Cascade coach Jerry Koester.

“When he gets it going, he does everything well,” Koester said.

In Thursday’s par round, Gorney hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation.

“He’s really consistent,” Koester said. “He gives himself a chance to score every time.”
